DNS propagation is the process of updating domain information across the internet.
When DNS settings change, different internet providers update their DNS caches at different times.
Why Propagation Happens
Internet infrastructure uses cached DNS data to speed up website loading. When changes occur, those cached records must expire before the new settings are used.
This causes a temporary delay while the updates spread globally.
How Long It Takes
Typical propagation times:
- Often within 30 minutes to several hours
- In some cases up to 24 hours
What You May See During Propagation
While DNS changes propagate, you may experience:
- Website loading on one device but not another
- Website loading on mobile data but not Wi-Fi
- Temporary parking pages
- Temporary error pages
These conditions resolve automatically once propagation completes.
